Dog Collar Types:

Flat Collar:

     A band and a buckle. Most dogs need one. Puppies should only wear a flat collar.
Pros: Simple and versatile. Can be worn all the time.
Cons: Can cause skin irritation, May harm some small breeds or dogs with a delicate trachea. Not good for discipline based training, but many trainers say it's fine for positive enforced training.

Martingale Collar:

    A combination of flat and choke collars. Adjustable so that it will only tighten to a certain degree, no matter how hard the dog pulls.
Pros: Good for small breeds. Limits amount of constriction.
Cons: May not be effective for training. Hard to adjust.

Head Halter:

     Loops around dog's muzzle and base of skull to control head movement.
Pros: Guides from muzzle and does not constrict neck. Provides nothing for the dog to pull against.
Cons: Tough to figure out and fit. Can cause neck injuries if pulled too hard or used improperly. Can't be used on dogs with short muzzles.

Choke or Slip Collar:

    Loop that constricts the neck when pulled. If used correctly, tightens momentarily, then loosens.
Pros: Effective for discipline based training, Clear communication between owner and dog.
Cons: Can be difficult to use. Harmful if used improperly. Can injure some breeds with delicate necks; consult your vet.

Prong and Pinch Collar:

    Metal collars with a series of rounded metal prongs that rest against a dog's neck.
Pros: Gets attention of stubborn dogs.
Cons: Prongs can cause punctures, skin irritation. Must be worn with supervision. Causes discomfort. Not for small dogs.

Electronic Collar:

    Battery powered device delivers shock or odor to curb bad behavior.
Pros: Gets attention of stubborn dogs. Can deter barking if owner is away.
Cons: Expensive. No control over correction. May deter intruder barking.

Harness:

    Wraps around a dog's torso with a leash hook on the back.
Pros: Will not choke. Good for small breeds. Most comfortable for walks on a leash.
Cons: Little training value. Can cause skin irritation if worn for too long.
