Puppy house training:
A new puppy is a very curious animal. He will try to stick his
little furry face into every hole, every door, and every amount of
space you can think of in your house. With that in mind, before we
start the housebreaking process we will puppy proof the house, which is
the most important part in puppy house training process.
Let’s go over things that should be done:
- Take care of all cords; tuck them in so that a puppy cannot reach
them. As well plug all electric outputs shut before leaving the pup
alone.
- Hide shoes, kid’s toys, TV remotes unless you want them destroyed by the sharp puppy teeth.
- Make sure all the plants are secured so that the curious fur ball can not pull them down.
- Hide all the reachable foods away from the puppy
- Store the cleaning solutions, soaps, knifes, forks, somewhere secured well above the reach of the puppy.
- Books! Make sure to hide away all of your books, in my experience puppies just love to chew on these.
- Just exercise common sense, anything that is left in reach of the
puppy will probably get tasted by him. So ideally you would remove
everything.
A very good practice is to leave the puppy in a small room which is
completely secured blocked off from the rest of the house, when you are
not home to watch him. We will go over this technique in more detail in
our Crate Training section.
